Matt Boyd is an American born director and creative, raised in Augsburg, Germany and the American South. Growing up across varied and diverse communities, his evolving obsessions with music, skateboarding, art, film and surf culture eventually led to a journey of filmmaking in NYC. His works include critically acclaimed features, short documentaries, concert films and portrait profiles with today’s leading artists, athletes, agencies and brands.
His debut feature A RUBBERBAND IS AN UNLIKELY INSTRUMENT world premiered at Toronto's Hot Docs and was a New York Times Critics Pick upon release. Variety's John Anderson hailed the film A work of dreamily seductive virtues that stretches the limits of nonfiction.
Boyd's TV, commercial and branded work include short and long form series, broadcast and online campaigns for a long list of brands to include Nike, Apple, IFC, Bose, Verizon, Spin, Vice, 1800 Tequila, Kia, Spotify, Jordan, Vevo, Sprite, and Heineken.
His film work in music over the last decade is extensive to include documentary shorts, features, concert films and live broadcasts. In 2009 he teamed with Jason Ross at Showcobra to make a mountain of films for Merge Records' 20th anniversary, XX MERGE. Notable collaborations include TIFF selection BUILDING A BROKEN MOUSETRAP, made with acclaimed filmmaker Jem Cohen and editing David Byrne’s RIDE RISE ROAR.
Notable directing commissions include Moby’s concert film, ALMOST HOME: MOBY LIVE AT THE FONDA, LAMBCHOP LIVE at XX MERGE and ALL THE WAY FROM MICHIGAN NOT MARS with Rosie Thomas, Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer.
As a director he has collaborated with a massive list of emergent and iconic artists and athletes that includes Karl-Anthony Towns, Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Lambchop, RZA, Moby, Spoon, Sue Bird, Ghostface Killah, Eric Haze, James Davis, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shepard Fairy, Chance The Rapper, Bon Iver, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, The Black Keys, Spiritualized, Eminem, Alt-J, The Flaming Lips, Local Natives, Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton.
Boyd is presently in development on the new doc series MYSTICAL BOOZE with longtime friend and collaborator Chris Bower. He currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.
